Research Interests

Stroke is the third leading cause of death and number one cause of disability in the United States.  Neurons in certain regions of the brain (e.g. CA1 pyramidal neurons in hippocampus and medium spiny neurons in neostriatum) are highly vulnerable to transient cerebral ischemia.  The mechanisms of such selective cell death following ischemia remain unknown.  The long-term goal of this laboratory is to reveal the mechanisms of neuronal damage following cerebral ischemia and provide basis for developing therapeutical interventions.  The current projects of this laboratory are investigating the electrophysiological and morphological changes associated with neuronal damage after transient cerebral ischemia in animal models.  The research techniques include: intracellular recording and staining in vivo and in vitro; patch-clamped whole-cell or single channel recording in brain slices; quantitative analysis of 3-D reconstructed neurons, light and electron microscopy; immunocytochemistry etc.  The results of these studies will improve understanding of the mechanisms of brain damage upon resuscitation following cardiac arrest.
